At the age of fifteen, Jacques Antoine Vallin entered the Académie Royale de Peinture in 1779 under the tutelage of history painter Gabriel Doyen. He was later a pupil of Callet and Antoine Renou. His debut at the Salons was in 1791, when he exhibited The Tempest and a Small Landscape. Attentive and curious, Vallin observed the French art scene, and his 18th-century works felt the influence of Vernet and Bidault. Finding his own expressive language and drawing inspiration from ancient history or mythology, works were born that depicted nymphs and bacchante placed in harmonious landscapes, often accompanied by fine golden light.
